Chris' Corner: I am starting my next 90 Day Challenge

I am starting my next 90 Day Challenge

This is a "dangerous" time of year (for me) to start a Challenge to lose weight, but then, when I thought about it, it might be the best time...

As some of you might know, My first 90 Day Challenge was to lose 45 pounds.  Ultimately, I fell short, I lost 42 pounds, 3 pounds less than my goal.

Its been 3 weeks since my challenge ended and I have so much more energy than I had at the end of August.  I have lost six inches off my waist.  I wore a suit to our company's Christmas party last weekend that I have not been able to wear comfortably since probably 2004 (it was a little loose!).  I was able to button up the collar on my shirt (something I haven't done, even using collar extenders, since 2007).  I can walk faster, longer and climb more flights of stairs than I could just four short months ago. All this said, I still have a long way to go.

I am starting another 90 Day Challenge today.  I have thought about this one more, and have chosen to include not only a weight loss component, but also some fitness components, achieved through not only healthier food intake but also increased physical activity.

  • I plan on losing 30 pounds in the next 90 days.
  • I want to lose 4 inches on my waist (I have noticed from my previous challenge that inches will come off appropriately elsewhere)
  • I will endeavour to increase my daily physical activity and walk at least 1 mile at least twice a weekI will achieve increased daily activity by choosing to park further away, choosing to walk up stairs when the option presents itself and to start using some of the many pieces of exercise equipment I have acquired over the years.

My thoughts are that, even though I know that I will not be able to maintain this program during my birthday, Christmas, New Years and on some occasions when we will socialize over the holidays, I will probably make "better" choices knowing that I am on a 90 Day Challenge and am accountable (if only to myself). At the end of this challenge, I will take new pictures (the ones I am currently using were taken in September, 2009) and update my picture online and on my business cards.

Well.  I have a new HERO!

I love to read about real estate folks who are health conscious.

Don't worry about your birthday and Christmas.  Just don't gorge and indulge yourself. You'll regret it if you do.

I'm a dedicated health nut and proud of it.  I'm also older than dirt and work circles around just about every person in this business I know.

I'm not obnoxious about it.  Just stubborn.  My health program began 32 years ago when I realized that the hormones and antibiotics fed to livestock caused serious health problems, especially in women.  That was it for meat/chicken for me.  My weight, cholesterol and blood Lennpressure are that of a person 35 years old, which I AM NOT.

Fruits, Vegetables, brown rice, beans (mostly Garbanzo), some whole wheat bread, some yogurt, etc. is what I eat and I eat a LOT OF IT.

I go to the gym about 3-4 times a week and find the resistance machines and treadmill for 1/2 to 1 hour keeps me very fit and maintains bone density which is important for older women. I've studied this stuff.

You have worked a miracle.  What you've achieved is not easy.  In the U.S., every city corner has a fast food place where there is absolutely nothing edible.  I carry apples in my car.  The only time I indulge is when I have to eat in a restaurant with buyers celebrating their new home and even then, I have the most nutritious food on the menu.  No one cares.  Folks who are overweight are safe with me because I don't preach.  I just take of what I eat, not anyone else.

Good luck and keep us posted about your progress.  I'll subscribe and follow.

Lenn, this journey has taken some unexpected twists, very similar to choices you have made.  We eat much more organic fruits and vegetables.  We consume much more fish and less meats.  The exercise is the last thing for me to add, I needed to lose weight before I was able to add exercise to my regimen.  I will keep you posted on my progress... this journey will continue for at least a year and end when I achieve a weight lower than I was when I left high school.  I have found my reason.  I will succeed.

I don't select organic fruits and vegetables because (1) the nutrition is the same, (2) the cost of organic makes no sense and (3) those dang organic farms keep having fisteria outbreaks.

Lenn, there is a group of local farms that provide food baskets through the summer of fresh, locally grown, picked when ripe organic fruits and vegetables.  They were much more cost effective than buying the same at a grocery store with the added benefit of being picked a day or two before delivery.  The difference in the taste was incredible!  I had forgotten how good fruit and vegetables can taste when picked ripe and eaten within days.

Chris:  Congratulations to you on the progress you have made already!  I know of no other addiction (and that's what I consider overeating/food) that requires you to just cut back to answer your addiction.  Everything else, like smoking and drugs, you can quit cold turkey.  Obviously not recommended with food!

Keep up the great work.  I'm rooting for you and will be watching for your updates and new pics ...

Enjoy your Holidays, stay safe, stay healthy ...

Chris, from personal experience I can tell you that the older I get the more difficult it is to stay in shape.  The #'s don't come off as easily as they used to...always a challenge, but I wish you success with your challenge and lifestyle change.
