Chris' Corner: I have started a 90 Day Challenge ...

I have started a 90 Day Challenge ...

... in which my goal is to lose 45 pounds.

A friend of mine, Jeremy, introduced me to a program in August of this year.  The nature of this program was to help you achieve goals you made for yourself.

These "goals" could be related to: Improving Your Fitness, Achieving Weight Loss, Improving your Financial Situation.

I had been contemplating starting yet another attempt to lose weight, and was formulating a plan.  As I have attempted numerous times the past, with varying levels of success, of course, I was skeptical. I lost just over 30 pounds in 2010 over 5 months but then fell of the wagon and eventually gained most of the weight back.

None of the people I met needed to lose the type of weight I wanted to lose, their goals revolved around either improving their financial situation and/or improving their level of fitness.  I met a competitive pairs figure skater (who is competing to represent Canada in the next Olympics), I met some Mixed Martial Artists who wanted to increase their fitness, and watched a testemonial from a person discuss how she lost over 160 pounds, the health benefits she attained, and her not needing insulin to maintain healthy blood sugar levels (she was a type II diabetic).

I was leaving for a vacation the next day but told him I was thinking of starting a program to lose weight in September and that I would try this system/program.

My "why" crystallized over our holiday.  I was unable to do many of the activities that my son would have loved me to do with him.  Climbing multiple flights of stairs was extremely strenuous.  I could not make it to the top of Mont Royal in Montreal.  I decided that I needed, not only for my own health, but also for my, and our enjoyment of life to lose weight and lose it NOW.

I started my 90 Day Challenge on August 27th, 2012 with the Goal of losing 45 pounds by November 25th, 2012 - a pace of 3.5 pounds per week.

I took pictures and measurements on the day I started (for now they are private).  I was advised to make me goal public (a form of accountability).  I hesitated about blogging about this in light of my past publicized failure.  I declared my goal to my friends on Facebook and to all family and friends I came in regular contact with.  Here is a synopsis of my progress so far:

90 Day Challenge to lose 45 pounds starting August 27, 2012.
Week 1 - 6 pound loss - 06 pound total loss / 39 pounds to go in 12 weeks
Week 2 - 5 pound loss - 11 pound total loss / 34 pounds to go in 11 weeks
Week 3 - 4 pound loss - 15 pound total loss / 30 pounds to go in 10 weeks
Week 4 - 5 pound loss - 20 pound total loss / 25 pounds to go in 9 weeks
Week 5 - 3 pound loss - 23 pound total loss / 22 pounds to go in 8 weeks
Week 6 - 3 pound loss - 26 pound total loss / 19 pounds to go in 7 weeks
Week 7 - 4 pound loss - 30 pound total loss / 15 pounds to go in 6 weeks

So far I have lost just over 2.5 inches off my chest and 4 inches off my waist.  I now weigh less than I have at any point since 2006.

After one month of my wife trying to lose weight on her own (without appreciable results), she started her 90 Day Challenge a week last Monday.  She has taken her "before" measurements, but prefers to achieve her goal without making her goals public.  I respect that, but just want to share that she lost 6 pounds in her first week (Helen has much less weight to lose than I do) and is well on her way to another successful week.

My overall goal is to weigh less than when I graduated high school, and increase my fitness level.  I am hoping that achieving this goal will allow me to partake in a wider range of physical activities on my own and with my son.  I also hope that this weight loss will reduce my insulin resistance (I have been type II diabetic for almost 20 years) and also reduce the amount of medication I need to keep my blood sugar level within an acceptable range.

I have chosen to work on this Goal using a series of 90 Day Challenges and break up each challenge into weekly milestones (this 90 Day Challenge has broken down to 13 weeks (minus 1 day) of losing 3.5 pounds per week).

Here is a link to the program I have chosen.  If you would like to achieve a health goal or to reduce your weight, and are not achieving the success you would like, I would love to share with you more of the details of what is working for me... just let me know =)

Good afternoon Chris,

It seems to be a very popular program at the moment and wish you success in your goals.

Six years ago I topped the scales at over three hundred and lost a little over a hundred and have put twenty back on; will be going back to the healthier diet to take that off. Look forward to your updates.

Make yourself a great ninety days.

Man Chris, that is awesome!  I am so proud of you and I know you feel great.  This is not easy, it's a total lifestyle change.  I quit drinking alcohol over a year ago and decided to get healthy with food and exercise.  I lost about 30 lbs doing it and I feel amazing.  It's hard, there are days I don't want to go work out but go to Pinterest and check out all the cool quotes under Health/Fitness.  One of my faves is "You're only one workout away from a good mood".

Proud of you Chris!! Keep it up!!!

Raymond, I had never heard of it, and have tried so many different ways to lose weight, all with little success and no real lasting success.  Hopefully this is different!

Chris:

You are the kind of person that I admire and pray for your individual success.  As a 'senior" I still weigh the exact same weight that I did at 20 years of age. Less muscle but the same weight. I have chosen "behavior modification" meaning eating ONE good meal per day, and avoiding going to breakfast, lunch, or dinner just because it is 7:00, 12:00 noon, or 6:00 evening. The clock has a way of making us act like Pavlov's dog, "we salavate when the clock goes off in our head.

Kerrie, thank you so much!  Though I already notice a difference in my energy level and stamina, because I am still so obese, I am not quite ready to take on a meaningful exercise regimen.  I am conciously trying to walk further, climb more stairs, but primarily am relying on diet to lose weight for now.  I will add a daily exercise regimen (walking to start) as soon as possible.

Bob, thank you for your prayers.  I have been overweight the majority of my life, it has only been the degree that has changed.  I had found it much harder to lose weight now, as I am getting older, than I did when I was younger.  This is the first program that seems to be working for me.

wow, good for you Chris.  I need to do this, too.  Yes, accountability is key as is setting goals.  I'm going to try to follow your lead.  I need to buy a scale.

Chris we truly feel you will do it! We can hear your committment. It will be helpful with Helen following the program as well. Here's to your success!

Debbie, I am doing this in conjunction with a few friends, the support is helpful.  One woman chooses not to look at the "scale", but measure her success in "dress sizes",  my wife is choosing to measure weight loss as a percentage of total original weight.

I am sure you will be successful, especially if you clarify a meaningful "why"!

Al and Peggy, The further I go with this program, the easier it seems to get.  Helen's participation will also help ensure success, Thank You

I am certain that you will achieve your goal and be able to keep the weight off this time Chris. Your determination not only comes from wanting to be healthier for yourself, but for your wife and now your son. I'm sure that when you start reaping the rewards next summer with all the activities and adventures that you and Alec will participate in that weren't possible in the past, that's when the big payoff comes. Keep it up Chris, you have a lot of people in your corner.

Hi Chris -- being very public in your accountability is very brave of you.  Congratulations on your success to date and you are definitely well on your way.   Thank you very much for sharing and I'm definitely going to check out your link -- it sounds as your success can be replicated in many ways.    Excellent!

Malcolm, if, no WHEN I achieve my goals, I will be approximately the weight I was when I married Helen (1999) when we vacation in March of 2013.  The Carrot of being able to play with my son, Alec, as well as all the health benefits should keep me on track.  Helen joining me also helps!

Michael,  I hesitated... especially in light of my "Flame Out" in 2010...  but I realized the benefits of public accountability outweighed the risk of public failure.  I have tried many times over the years to lose weight, and I have found it increasingly difficult as I get older.

Finding the right "why" and the right program for me makes all the difference!

Good luck with your challenge.  Feeling thin is better than tasting good.

Have a wonderful weekend.  Enjoy the colors of autumn with your camera in hand.

Liz, I only lost 2 pounds this week, but that is still 2 pounds lighter than I was last week.

That is a healthy rate of loss, and certainly better than 2 pounds up!

Stick with the challenge.  It is a lifetime of effort to control weight after being heavy.

Enjoy the colors of autumn with your camera in hand.
