Chris' Corner: Alecs Birthday Cake

Alecs Birthday Cake

For Helen and I, a child came later in our lives, and without much forethought
... the time has flown by.  We have enjoyed all the family time that we have managed this month, whether playing games indoors (to beat the heat), or in the pool late afternoons (when the sun is not so harsh), and we saw Brave in Orangeville last Sunday.  Helen is of Scottish heritage, so this movie, like Braveheart, was a "must see".

I tend to be the more pragmatic person of the two of us.  So when Helen told me that she wanted to bake Alec a special cake for his birthday I was totally disinterested.  A few years ago, Helen baked Alec a money cake (with coins wrapped in wax paper in the cake).  Last year, Helen made Alec a "Rainbow" cake, with layers the colours of the rainbow.  This year she told me that she wanted to make something different!

Helen's Cake for Alec's Birthday
After a couple of tries, Helen ended up with the requisite three segments, two vanilla and one chocolate, (the halves of the bun and the burger) and then it time for decorating.  I have to admit that I was very impressed with the end product (even her use of a failed attempt at the top half of the bun to make "french fries"). Cheerios were used for sesame seed, fondant for the cheese and the lettuce.  Strawberry jam became the Ketchup.  When she asked me to come down and look at it, I was amazed.  What made this cake "work" even better was Helen's proclivity to mix up her meals... breakfast for dinner, dinner for breakfast.  So a Hamburger and Fries was a perfect "Birthday Cake"!

Helen even kept our tradition and put coins in the burger segment.  The cake was the hit of the party with something for everyone... Coins, Chocolate, icing, and fondant.

The gauntlet has been thrown, what will Helen do next year?

Chris:  This isn't a birthday cake for Alec ... it's edible artistry!  Unbelievable!  Can't imagine the time and energy it took to create this ... let alone the love.  One lucky birthday boy!

You should be proud ...

Chris - I can see where this would be the hit of the party ..... a trip to McD's without the trip ..... hmmm I wonder if she could sell her cake (the idea of a burger cake) to McD's

Wow, what a cake. I'm sure Alec would have been happy with his burger cake, creative and delicious. I think that it's your turn to make the birthday cake next year Chris, Helen deserves a break. I think you can rise to that challenge.

Wow -- Helen baked some cake, Chris! My mother used to make a "back to school cake" each year; in between the layers would be coins, pencil top erasers, slip of paper to redeem for a pencil or notebook, all wrapped in waxed paper. We loved those cakes!

That is so very cool, when I first saw the picture I actually thought it was a burger and not a cake, two thumbs up.

Kathy, it was not her idea, she saw something like it in the Foodland in Tottenham, and then looked on the internet for ideas...

Al and Peggy, my original thoughts were that it wouldn't be worth her efforts and no one would care... but it really was a hit!

Lottie, Helen is a teacher... no way I could get her to bake a back to school cake...

she whines when she sees the first "back to school" ads...

Gabe, I can attest, it not only looked good, it tasted great, there was the chocolate layer, the vanilla layers, the different icing and fondant flavours, and the strawberry jam... worked well together.
