Chris' Corner: Wal-Mart Canada to spend $750 Million to expand and update

Wal-Mart Canada to spend $750 Million to expand and update

Wal-Mart Canada to spend $750 Million to expand and update facilities in Canada.

Wal-Mart Canada, which currently operates 333 stores across the country, is planning on 73 new projects to expand/update, relocate or create new centres, more than half of them supercentres with full service foodmarts.

Wal-Mart Supercentres

These projects will add 4.6 million square feet to Wall-Mart's operations in the next year.  These moves should create 14,000 new jobs over the next year.

With Target scheduled to open 24 stores in Ontario by April of 2013 and other U.S. retail giants like Kohl's and Nordstrom eyeing expansion into Canada, this looks like a move to cement Wal-Mart's standing in Canada.

Hi Chris - Walmart Canada has been converting many of their regular stores to SuperCentres over the past few years.  However, I have yet to find any open 24 hours a day except around Christmas.  I am looking forward to Target.  It would be nice to add Kohls and Nordstrom since we have so few department stores chain in Canada.

That is a lot of improvement dollars Chris. Many have already been renovated but with such a huge traffic volume daily they seem to wear out quickly.

We like to shop at the Super Walmart in New Braunfels, a one-stop shop. They have everything we need from prescriptions, clothing, electronics and groceries and a great garden-nursery dept. Love the on-stop shopping.

Hi Chris, our local Walmart just expanded into a supercentre and now we can buy groceries there too. They certainly are a company that likes to get bigger and bigger each passing year. They must be very tough to compete with.

Chris, I am all for creating jobs when possible. It helps the local economy and puts a roof over people's head and food on the table for many. Congrats on all the new business coming into Canada!
