Chris' Corner: Generate Electricity in your South Simcoe Home

Generate Electricity in your South Simcoe Home

Most governments are promoting energy efficiency in the home and even home generation of electricity. Grants and other incentives vary greatly, so investigate what might be available in your area at the moment.

Click here for some general background energy information,

Three ways to generate electricity on your property, even if you live in a city, are:

Solar: The use of photo-voltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity is on the rise as demand increases, prices decrease and the constant development and improvement of Solar power delivery systems.

Wind:  There have been many innovations of late in both horizontal and vertical wind turbines enabling their use in smaller lots.  Usually tied into the power grid, there are systems available now that will generate power from a wind as low as 2 mph.  I have been fascinated with vertical wind turbines for years as they will catch wind in any direction and tend to have a smaller footprint that horizontal turbines.

Dual Access Vertical Wind Turbines

MicroCHP:  These systems generate both heat and power from a single source of energy.  They operate by generating electricity and using "waste" heat to heat the home and/or water.
