This is something I had forgotten about... It had been years since I have had a serious bout of the hiccups. But last night, after Alec was put to bed, Helen and I were catching up on last year's new HBO series Boardwalk Empire (We had saved the episodes on our Video Recorder's Hard Drive for summer viewing), IT happened...
I had one hiccup, then another, then another ...
I looked over to Helen and she had that gleam in her eye. I told her "NO"!!
We continued to watch the show, but the hiccups would not stop. Finally, I relented.
My wife probably did this to me for the first time twelve years ago, soon after we met... at the time I laughed it up and attributed to more of her Scottish superstitions...
except this worked... I never gave it the due it deserved, and I am sure there are other equally effective cures for the hiccups, but my wife has had this very unique (to me) cure that I have always relished belittling.
She scolded me for my apparent derision and challenged me to blog about her cure. I told her that if it worked, I would.
I shouldn't have, it has always worked...
Now I am keeping up my end of the bargain.
We paused the episode we were watching and Helen came over to me with a glass of ice-cold water (it doesn't have to be ice-cold). She grabbed both my earlobes and pulled them gently apart... now it was my turn. Sip, Swallow, Sip, Swallow, Sip, Swallow. We waited. Oh how I wanted to have another hiccup, this time... but again my hiccups were gone... it makes no sense...
The experimenter in me would love to try variations like pulling one earlobe, pinching one's nose, only sipping and swallowing twice... but Helen won't let me. This is the way it has to be!
Helen can't even remember how she learned of this "miraculous" cure... she now is giving it some mystical "it came to me in a dream" speech...
Please, anyone out there, Share your can't miss Hiccup cures with me so I do not have to live the rest of our lives with a wife whose eyes light up and develops a smirk as soon as I start to hiccup...

Wow, Chris... a "cure" that works. This sure sounds better than those other crazy "cures", such as standing on your head, holding your breath, counting backwards, etc.
I hope I can remember your cure next time I get an attack of the hiccups!
Haha! I will try out Helen's cure the next time I'm burdened with a hiccup problem.
Fred, it has always worked once you try it and see for yourself, you won't forget it...
Krista, you can cure anyone's hiccups... but you need someone to tug on your ears if you have them.
Chris...sounds like of you video yourself during your hiccup cure phase, I'm thinking that could be a great addition to the Video contest here on AR! lol
My mom was over for dinner the other night. We were all sitting on the back of the deck when she got a case of the hiccups. For her, it's a teaspoon of sugar. That worked! Enjoy the day!
Karen, I would prefer a teaspoon of sugar to my wife always being right ;-)
I always htought that water helps, regardless of temperature or earlobe pulling. It usually works for me.
Hi Chris - A very interesting cure. I will need to remember it for next time.
Also, remember, the wife is always right.
