Chris' Corner: Pay it forward at the Gas Pumps!!!

Pay it forward at the Gas Pumps!!!

OK, as many of you know, my Passat Station wagon car takes Diesel...  so with the good mileage (6.7 to 7.2 litres per 100 km in the summer) and decent range (from 950 km to 1050 km per tankful) I do not fill up that often, but today happened to be one of those occasions.

Now I am not sure what the weather has been like where you live, but we have had sunny warm days earlier in the month, and lately, lots of rain.  This weather seems to be ideal for two things, the weeds in my gardens, and the bugs.  The skeeters (and other insects) are huge this year and are out there in force.  Our windshields can attest to this!

There are normally a limited number of diesel pumps in any gas station, and they are normally on the last aisle.  This morning I had to wait while a lady finished pumping her gas so I decided to take advantage of the time to clean my windshield with the squeegee supplied. When the lady finished filling her tank, she went inside to pay for the fuel.  I noticed that her front windshield was full of dead bugs, even worse than mine was, and took advantage of her absence to scrub and clean her windshield.  She thanked me when she came out and talked about the upcoming long weekend.

We reminisced of the days gone by when cleaning a windshield and offering to check your oil and your wiper fluid was part of the the service when you gassed up.  Those were the days ...

In my life, there have been many people who have helped me in many, many ways on so many occasions, one couple that immediately comes to my mind are now lifelong friends, Al and Peggy Cunningham, people that I could never truly repay... so when I have an opportunity to help someone, even in a very small way, I try and help them if I possibly can...

So true Chris, that was once part of the customer service that gas stations offered! *Sigh* Gone are those days indeed!

Hi Chris,

Way to go, it is all about doing the little things, they make all the differnce, you made somebody's day and in the process, made you feel good as well.....

Wanda, the whole gas station experience is now so sterile.

Peter amd Linda, people appreciate those little things... it can change their attitude and their outlook...

Chris, What a nice tribute to Al and Peggy.  I just read a pay it forward post - the person gave a $10 gas card to someone who asked for money.  Cleaning the windshield ... what a great idea and a sure surprise for the recipient.

Hi Chris - If you ever want to have a gas station fill up your tank, simply go to any gas station in New Jersey.  By law, the gas attendant must fill your tank.

Kathleen, Al and Peggy have "payed it forward" to me in ways I could never repay...

Marc, I hope I remember this if I am in New Jersey during inclement weather... it would be nice to have more full serve gas stations in Canada

Chris...that is SO you!! Bugs are the worst things to try and get off the windshields! Bet that lady was pleasantly relieved to see what you had done and will for sure think of you all day whenever she drives. You are making your footsteps very big for us to fill Chris!

We've had a great deal of rain as well, Chris, but it's been much needed! I've always got bugs all over my windsheild so it would be so cool if I walked out and someone was cleaning it for me. What a great pay it forward!
