April is Earth Month - Develop Earth Friendly Shopping Habits

Do you want to make better choices in the foods you buy?

Are you trying to navigate the minefield that is food and nutritional labeling in an effort to buy healthier and more "eco-friendly"?

Here are some tips that will result in choices that our better for our health and our environment:

  • Reduce your food waste - regardless of how "good" your choices are, if you are wasting your food, our planet suffers.
  • Buy locally from farmers that are producing their crops in environmentally sensitive manner - it is much easier to ensure that your local farmer is environmentally sensitive practices.
  • Buy Seasonal produce to eliminate the hidden environmental costs of transportation. Buy Organic foods where possible - organic labeling can be hard to navigate.
  • Choose eco-friendly and sustainably harvested fish.
  • Eat less meat - this is good for your health, and our environment. It can take 17 pounds of vegetable protein to create 1 pound of beef protein, and this does not take into account damage to our environment caused by waste related to beef production and transportation costs.

Hi Chris - It is so difficult to purchase many food products from the grocery store due to the new food labelling laws that allow manufacturers to simply state that the ingredients are from domestic and foreign sources and don't require the country(ies) to be listed.

Carol, thank you and I hope they help.

Valerie, I grew up with meatless Fridays, and I think I am going to suggest we move to two meatless days a week, and we are trying to move to smaller portions of meat when we have meals with meat.

Marc, I find the same issues, and will try and blog about labelling soon.
