Food Irradiation - Pro's and Con's

Food Irradiation, according to a definition in Wikipedia is: the process of exposing food to ionizing radiation to destroy microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, or insects that might be present in the food. Further applications include sprout inhibition, delay of ripening, increase of juice yield, and improvement of re-hydration. Irradiated food does not become radioactive, but in some cases there may be subtle chemical changes.

Food Irradiation in Canada

April 2012 Survey of Canadian Opinion regarding Food Irradiation

In Canada, three types of radiation are permitted: Gamma Ray, X-ray and Electron Beam radiation.
It is possible for irradiated food to become contaminated after it has been treated.

There is much controversy over the subject, and I have chosen to post some videos and some links to both the "PRO" side and the "CON" side of the issue.

Better decisions are generally made when more correct information is obtained as early as possible.  This information might lead you to your own research, allowing you to make a better informed choice for you and your loved ones...

PRO's

Health Canada Information on Food Irradiation

Idaho State University information on Food Irradiation

CON's

Whats wrong with Food Irradiation

Food Irradiation benefits packer and grocer, not the farmer or consumer

Negative effects of Food Irradiation found in recent studies

Regardless of the side of the fence you happen to reside, or whether you are sitting on it, I feel that more informative and accurate labeling can only lead to better choices by the consumer, I leave you with a link to a link to the case of mandatory GMO labeling, not food irradiation, but a similar concern facing consumers.

Would you avoid buying Meats or Produce that have undergone Irradiation? ... or would you seek them about?
